Hi all, firstly to those of you who signed the recent Love London, Go Dutch Cycling campaign petition you’ll be pleased to know the momentum is building. Yesterday the Prime Minister held a roundtable meeting at No.10 with leading Danish architects to discuss innovative designs for more cycle friendly cities. Tomorrow Parliament, for the first time since 1996, will be holding a debate to discuss the issue of cycle safety on our roads. However, only 58 Members of Parliament (fewer than 1 in 10) have so far signed Early Day Motion 2689, calling on the Government "to take further action to improve cycling infrastructure and reduce the number of casualties on roads" – you can see check up on your local MP to see if they have signed the motion or by clicking on this link:

Hi everyone,

Firstly, a quick reminder to join in with everybody signing the Love London, Go Dutch petition for the London Cycling Campaign – www.lcc.org.uk. Cycling is booming in London (117% rise on the TFL road network since 2000) and despite the myths it has never been safer to join everybody else now cycling (reported cycling fatalities in the UK, per KM travelled, has halved in the past two decades). Cycling at least twenty miles a week reduces the risk of heart disease to less than half that for non-cyclists who take no other exercise. Cyclists typically have a level of fitness equivalent to being 10 years younger.

Thanks to those who sent me availability for Wednesday. The batting slots are full, but the opening and closing slots are filled by (cough-cough) “all-rounders” at the moment – I’m sure one of them would be happy to concentrate purely on the bowling discipline though if somebody wants to request a batting slot, just let me know asap. Please remember to bring your cricket balls if have any. If any of you have friends / colleagues that are keen to turn up for a batting / bowling slot, please do let me know asap. Lingfield Park hole-in-one competition

On the coldest day of the century to date a handful of foolhardy Cypos players thought it a good idea to subject themselves to 18 holes at Lingfield Park. Three of the players - Willis, Ngyou and Metkay - all attempted an audacious hole-in-one at a certain hole on the course. 2012 CYPOS winter nets

Hi everyone,

It’s that cold, dark time of the year when Wednesday evenings can’t come round soon enough – why? Well because Wednesday night means net night at the Oval. It’s time to lube up your cricket bat with another coat of royal linseed and warm up that spinning wrist by doing some “extra stretching”!

Cypos winter nets start on Wednesday 18th January. Unlike last year, we will be reverting our weekly nets back to a Wednesday this year rather than a Thursday. Still, the format will remain virtually same for the cypos veterans amongst us:

Venue: The Ken Barrington Cricket Centre, The Oval
Time: 7pm - 8pm
Dates: Every Thursday from 13th Jan to 18th April (though potentially going into the summer – more info in March)
Number of nets: 1 (We decided to reduce the number of nets per evening to just 1 due to the number of cancelled nets last year)

With regards to booking your slot, I will be asking (via email) for you to let me know your availability for each net session at least 5 days in advance (close of play on Friday), so I can send out confirmations / stand-downs at least 2 days before the net.

With regards to cost, our club has already paid in advance nearly £600 to Surrey CC to cover the costs of these nets, and we must make sure that money is recovered over the cost of winter nets. Each net costs £38, so depending on how many players attend nets each week that bill will be divided up to calculate subs - the more of us who attend the less subs costs (i.e. if only 5 people attend then that will be £8 each, but if full capacity 9 people attend then we can drop subs down to a minimum £5).

With regards to equipment, the club is low on old cricket balls this year so please do bring your own if you have one. The club will hopefully purchase a couple of new ones too to give both the quicks something to smile about and me something to brick myself about! Normally (although not always) you can borrow someone's batting gear but it does help to bring your own batting kit if you have some (and your own box is a must!). No whites are required and footgear is indoor trainers.

With regards to allocation of batting and bowling slots, this all depends on numbers. Given we only have 1 net it will be probably pretty difficult for everyone to bat and bowl at the same net. However over the course of nets we'll make sure you're allocated slots to do both! Also, depending on number of players available there will be either 4 (x15min) batting slots per net or 3 (x20min) batting slots per net. As per last year there should be no more than 5 bowlers per net at any one time. So if there is a full capacity 9 people their 4 will be batting, and 5 will be bowling over the hour

Obviously there's a lot more to making nets a success than just a bit of organisation, ranging from turning up in good time to being flexible about who changing the batting order because of transport delays. However, ultimately this depends on every one of us showing a little bit of foresight (i.e. call if delayed) and understanding (i.e. Some people will be stood down if demand outstrips supply, but will try to make sure everyone has a fair crack at bowling & batting slots over the winter period*).

*Note if you are stood down but still want a net, or just if your name is Gaj: Drop-in clinics for adults are held on Friday nights at the Ken Barrington Cricket Centre from 7-9pm. 2012 CYPOS Membership fees

Hi everyone,

Happy new year! I am just about to send out an email about Winter Nets which start next Wednesday. Before that, I’m afraid as your treasurer I have to remind you that your 2012 membership fees (plus outstanding debt from the 2011 year) are now due. Most members paid their 2011 membership fees in this month last year, and – in advance - many thanks for your help with getting all the fees in again in January this year. Thanks also to those of you who have already paid your 2012 membership fee / paid off your 2011 debt – really appreciated.

Membership fee payment in early part of the year is really important for the club as it enables us to: pay for the home game pitches in advance, to pay for the club insurance, to pay the conference fixture bureau, and to pay for new equipment such as cricket balls for the season.

As agreed as the AGM membership fees are fixed at the same rate for the 5th year in succession: £30 for full membership, £15 for Students, £15 for association membership (if going to play 3 games or less)

Please pay your membership fee (plus your 2011 debt, or minus your 2011 credit – see list below) into the CYPOS bank account & sent me a confirmation email (telling me the reference you used to make the transfer) by the 5th February. Note that priority for the 1 net each week this year will be given to those who have already paid in their membership fees. The Cypos cc bank account details are in the email sent to you

Fixtures Update for 2012

Hi all,

Please find a copy of the first draft fixture list for the 2012 season here. The season is due to start with a match against Sunbury on Sunday 15/4/12, with matches every weekend finishing with Pacific on Saturday 13/10/12. There are four dates to fill in:

- Sunday 20/5 (likely Hillingdon Manor)

- Sunday 29/7 (possible tour - still in the works)

- Sunday 19/8 (likely Southgate)

- Sunday 23/9 (tbc)

I will notify you of the pitches for the Energy Exiles match on Sunday 13/5 and the Birkbeck College match on 26/8 when received.

I am also looking to see if we can add a fixture to the Marlow Park Sunday (2/9) for a possible weekend tour.

Good afternoon Chaps,

After the roller coaster season that was 2011, we are combining the AGM with the Awards night this year. Please add this event to your calendars for 3 weeks from tonight, Friday 2^nd December.

Venue to be confirmed, but will probably be The Rocks restaurant on Vauxhall Bridge Road, as per the last couple of years.

End of season drinks & Owen's farewell

To wish our fond farewell to Owen - he's migrating to Wales ..too easy to roll off the insults at this point - and to see off another good cricket the season in fine spirits, and just generally catch up, thought it will be a fine time to meet for some beers and food at the Anchor Bankside on the 23rd of September...

Aim is to kick off at 5.00ish till (very) late .. partners/spouses/girlfriends friends are welcome .. and encouraged to ensure that Owen at least on the surface looks popular and well liked ....The nearest train/tube station is London Bridge and and the address is below..

Principality tour11 - Chepstow 26june match report

Match report to follow. Cypos won! On the final game of the tour Cypos batted first and racked up 217 thanks to an excellent century from Mr.Cromack and good support from first Emu and then Charlie. In reply Chepstow got off to a flier, but thanks to an all-round excellent bowling unit display we were able to restrict them to less than 200 in their 40 overs.

Principality tour11 - cannock wood 25june match report

Match report to follow. Cypos won on the first day of the tour without rain! Cypos put on 227 in their 40 overs - skipper for the day gg scored a half century, but was upstaged by Ron who made a brutal century which included 8 sixes! We bowled them out for 137, with monks taking 4-21 thanks to very helpful turning pitch!

Principality Tour 2011 - Bridgend 24th June 2011 match report

Match report to follow. Cypos got absolutely destroyed by some Glamorgan colts and minor league players! After being bowled out for 115 in Cypos 40 overs, we enjoyed a cracking tea before their young opening batsmen knocked off the runs required within 10 overs, both scoring 50s with ease. Our best bowler Tila was dispatched for 7 boundaries in a row at one point - they weren't even bad balls considering how hard it was to bowl in the wet conditions!

Principality Tour 2011 - golf morning 24th June 2011

On a gorgeous Welsh morning the Cypos golfers (Emu, J.Willis, Monks and Mick-Calfe) teed-off at a beuatiful course in Coychurch just outside Bridgend. Congratulations go to James Willis who won the front nine with 20 points and 'Mick Calfe' (Metcalfe's new name that was entered into the scorebook by the boys at Aberdare yesterday) who cleared up on the back nine with some fantastic golf. An honorable mention should also go Emu who managed to mis guide a 7-iron 20 yards straight into the front window of his buggy, smashing a perfect hole to create a new style air-con!

Principality Tour 2011 - Aberdare 23rd June 2011 match report

Match report to follow. Cypos lost a close rain delayed 30 over match against a strong Valley based team. Aberdare hit 174-4 in their 30 overs - mainly thanks to a 100+ stand from the opening batsmen, one of whom went on to hit 96. Honorable mentions to Terry Gracey and Tila (skipper for the day) who bowled exceptionally well. In reply the Cypos openers of Vicks and Emu played fantastically knocking up a 90 run partnership before Emu fell. Homeboy Owain then played some fantastic stuff supporting Vicks, then supported by Monks himself. However after Monks fell the cypos collapse kicked in and we fell short by 15 runs and down to our last wicket when our 30 overs were up. Still a great way to start to the tour, minus the on-off rain and very late finish (9:15pm!)

NPL(a) 19th June 2011 - match report

Cloudy skies with 10% chance of precipitation faced the warriors of CYPOS? as they herded down to NPL’s quaint home complex. Some members of the team were also faced with stinging hangovers and logistical difficulties. Being a part of that latter group, your scribe arrived late unsure of whether Charlie had won or lost the toss, nor whether we were bowling or batting. After some friendly internal sledging it was discovered we were in fact bowling. It is still unknown as to who won the toss.

Adeel and Tila opened the bowling and found a good rhythm with a slippery, muddy ball due to the precipitation which eventuated in spite of the probabilities predicted by the good people at the weather bureau. Tila, not satisfied with contributing to the team effort with his champagne line and length effected the first wicket with a run out - a stunning piece of athleticism in the field and a direct hit. With Charlie implementing a three man slip cordon, these NPL cricketers knew we weren’t here to stuff around.

Adeel bowled without much luck, including a grassed one eighth of a chance from your scribe after charging in from long on and just failing to get the ball at a catchable height. Cyrus and myself were assigned responsibility to continue the good work of the openers. Cyrus picked up a bagful in his combined spell, whilst Kaz and Gannan bowled with good rhythm and aggression when bought into the attack and both collected wickets. There was some excellent partnership bowling in the CYPOS attack on this day. Wickets fell steadily, exposing the junior members of the NPL team to the tight line and length and strangling pressure being delivered by the Cypos attack.

Admittedly, after being sent to fine leg/third man following my spell, the attention began to diminish and further specifics of the innings escape me – but the pressure told in the end and NPL were all out for 119. The tea was ok, however many team members missed out on the sausages due to a sharp-elbowed Tila.

GG and Kaz were assigned with initiating a run chase and provided all present with a great exhibition of what it is like when a man beats a dog. Some beautiful stroke play ensued and the batsmen were also entertaining those present with some seemingly political running between the wickets – great stuff.

Tila whilst umpiring, perhaps still a bit groggy from the sausages, was missing some blatant no balls of the young NPL spinner whose elbow was clearly going past 15 degrees at the bend – however it was great sportsmanship to let the kid get away with it. GG (30-40 odd) went with the score about 80 and Adeel’s mate came in for a swing. Kaz (50-60 odd) went shortly thereafter and Gannan came in for a swing. Gannan went swinging so Charlie came in for a swing. Charlie and Adeel’s mate swung as to the total with roughly 15 overs to spare. A good drink with some NPL lads and a listen to Sid’s stories was had in the clubhouse after the match to end a good day. Honourable mention to Sid and Ron who provided good support and chatter for the team throughout the game whilst not getting a chance to shine.

Ottershaw(a) 5th June11 - Match report

Match abandoned at Tea. Despite an afternoon of rain we tried to get a game of cricket on. Cypos batted first in a time game - as is the tradition at the beautiful ground in Surrey. Emu and Swiss opened the batting and on a flat batting track played themselves in, before Emu played on for 23. This bought Giles to the crease who with a few stunning cracks to the boundary proved after a couple of overs that 'you never lose it'. After seeing off the first 15 overs Swiss unluckily held out to a good catch at mid-off for 14. Cromack joined Giles and played a useful supporting role until he fell victim to a shooter and was bowled. In-form skipper came to the crease and helped to up a now pretty slow run rate - thanks to some tight bowling and worsening batting conditions.

Giles carressed his way past a half century, before Charlie edged the Ottershaw leg-spinner behind after hitting a useful 20-odd. Monks joined Giles as the declaration approached. Monks added a quick fire 16 before edging behind and walking, unlike Competitive Miller who had to be triggered out by Emu after edging his delivery while in his 60s. J.Willis, Bob Oldfield and Tila all added useful runs in the last 12 deliveries to bring the Cypos declared total to 168-8. Obviously Cyrus and Gaj would have took it over the 200 mark if they were given the opportunity to bat.

It was touch and go whether Ottershaw would start their innings as the rain was coming ever harder. The clincher was a superb tea, meaning that after 5 slices of pizza, half a quiche and 3 pavlova tarts Bob Oldfield was in no position to take to the field! Tea-time simply rolled on and at 6pm the skippers took the obvious and sensible decision to call off the game.

Battersea Ironsides(a) 29th May11 - match report

One-hundred years ago this week ship number "401" was launched off a slipway in Belfast, and I'm sure the well informed cyposian read about the "celebrations" this weekend for the birth of the Titanic. However I suspect few Cyposians know of our very own connection to this piece of history - newly released records of the ship's ill-fated first journey confirm that back in 1911 a recently retired Bob Oldfield boarded the vessel as the Vatican city's representative. Thankfully Bob was recused by a young Leanodo di Caprio and we are all able to enjoy this his memorial season together!

On a sunny day, a strong looking Cypos team (and Sid) pitched up to a municipal park just north of Raynes Park station for the much anticipated fixture with Battersea Ironsides - a team that did a well-deserved double over Cypos last season. Skipper Willis, bullish with recent wins and personal form, decided to bat first in this 40 over match. The big hitting duo of GG and Kaz opened the batting and immediately looked to attack. While it's always refreshing to see a young spinner opening the bowling one did feel for him a bit facing Kaz who looked to take advantage of a short legside boundary. Runs came very quickly, cracking on at two boundaries an over. However Ironsides had a pretty decent south african fielder patrolling the legside boundary, and within the space of an over GG then Kaz held out to his bucket hands - or hand in Kaz's case (a brilliant one handed catch)! This bought in-form Charlie Willis in at 3 and who-knows-what-form Sid in at number 4.

The two batsmen played some cracking stuff, kept the scoreboard pushing along at an excellent rate and punished the bad balls each over. After a partnership of 30+ and looking in no trouble whatsoever to the first change slow bowlers, Charlie played an uppish shot which was dropped in the square but still triggered an ambitious run from Sid! It was a touch and go run in any situation but given the young ironside fielder collected himself immediately and delivered a direct hit Charlie found himself out by a good 3 feet. This bought Ron to the crease who played himself in while Sid now decided to smash the struggling bowlers to all parts of the ground. Sid looked on for a major score, but three shy of his half century he drove a half volley uppishly and was caught in the covers.

Cypos found themselves in the odd position of having plenty of runs on the board - 120 at the 18 over mark, but not much batting to come after the drinks break. Monks came in at number six to partner Ron who was now starting to punish the bad ball with ease. The Ironside skipper decided to play his joker at this point and he bought on his swift paced South African. If he could bowl half as well as he could field then it was looking likely the Cypos innings would end soon - thankfully he couldn't! While he was clearly too quick for Monks (not saying much!) he didn't get anything on the wickets (too busy going for the rib cage!), and when Monks did stand his ground he even managed to square cut a few to the boundary! However, the new bowler from the other end was also pretty useful too, and together they did slow the run rate considerably.

After nudging the score along at 4 an over for 15 overs Ron and Monks started to swing the bat a bit more and Ron reached a well deserved 50. Shortly afterwards though he held out to a fielder in the deep, bringing Metcalfe to the crease. After a couple of cracking drives (for a single!) Monks took an ambitious run only to see his new South African friend throw the stumps down with one-hand and Metcalfe was unluckily sent back to the hutch. Terry Gracey showed some Aussie grit with the bat adding a few more to the total and holding out while trying to up the run rate. For the final over Monks was joined by Fraser and were determined to run for everything. With 4 balls to go Monks did a(nother) play and miss to the south african outside off stump with the ball going straight into the hands of the WK. Monks heard the shout of YES from the other end and started running only to learn it was the bowler who had shouted it not Gus! Monks was run out for 30-odd, bringing Tila to the wicket and the close of innings just shy of 220. Probably a bit under par, but could have been a lot worse if Cypos had collapsed at the mid way point.

Following a shocking value-for-money tea (for £40 last year we got hot food at their home ground, this year we were lucky to get a sandwich ...to be fair Sid was ahead of me in the queue!) Cypos took to the field. Metcalfe opened up coming up the hill and Tila opened up coming down it from the pavilion end. While Tila struggled to find the right length on a couple of awkward beamer -length occasions he managed to deliver a couple of crackers to remove the openers. In at number 3 though was their superstar player who could clearly bat, yet thanks to good bowling didn't really take initiative. After Metcalfe and Tila, Monks and Ram came on to bowl and caused a few problems, but also went for a few. Monks picked up a wicket thanks to a handy catch from Kaz, but at the other end the Saffer was starting to look dangerous.

Wickets continued to come at regular occasions helped by some good fielding and after the drinks break Ironsides looked up against it with only 15 overs to go and over a 100 needed. Aussie Terry had replaced Monks and was proving very difficult to get away, but the wickets just would not come - we only needed 2 more for the victory now! Gus and Monks were called back into the attack, and to the shock of his fellow cyposians actually produced one over which looked almost county standard! The ball was now turning quite a bit and when put on the right line was causing both batsmen problems. The skipper - together with the bowler and half the team - thought he had a stumping, given the batsman was well out his ground and foot in the air but sadly the square-leg umpire didn't agree. Soon after though Cypos resumed composure, resisted directing him to the local specsavers, and Gus closed the innings. Firstly dismissing the South African batsman in his 70s thanks to a v.sharp dismissal from Willis (if the other one was obvious this one was very very tight, but to his credit the bat walked), then dismissing the skipper without troubling the scorer. Ironsides had fallen 80 runs short of their target.

A comprehensive win for Cypos, although watch out for a few of those Ironsides young players - in the next season or two they will be causing teams lots of problems. That was for another day though as we all retired to an idylic setting on the edge of Wimbledon common to enjoy a pint of ale! Three wins on the bounce now for Cypos! For the next social we’re going to try and get some tickets for this year’s Twenty20 match between Middlesex and Surrey at Lords. 7 days after CYPOS? recorded their first victory of the season at Brookwood's Sheets Heath Lane ground, CYPOS? welcomed Brookwood to the Old Tiffininans for the immediate return fixture. With Adrian “Big A” Hogarth making his first appearance of the season and Giles “Pampers” Miller returning to the side for the first time since September 2009, CYPOS? fielded a very experienced and consequently very old side.

Skipper Willis won the toss (or did Brookwood lose it?) and despite a short sharp rain shower, elected to bat first. Still flush from last weeks maiden century, Ian “The Man with the Ginger Ton” Garrard and Adrian Hogarth were first into battle with the ball. Apart from the strong blustery wind the pitch was not a patch on Brookwood's with uneven bounce and the outfield was slow so it soon became clear that the batsmen would have to work quite hard to accumulate runs. As if the demonstrate the point Hogarth got one that barely rose above ankle high and pinged back his leg stump and CYPOS? were 4-1.

Owain Howell joined the ton machine but he too soon fell to a fine high one handed catch at extra cover, this was nothing like last weeks game as CYPOS? were 8-2. Miller joined Garrard and for a while CYPOS? consolidated their position until Garrard's eyes lit up at a short leg side ball. Moving inside to play the pull shot we aren't quite sure if the wind blew the ball in towards the stumps he just misread it, what was clear from your correspondents position at square leg was that the ball died and fell on to the bails; CYPOS? were struggling on 25-3.

Iron Fist Ron Hubbard was in next and once again CYPOS? seemed to be settling into a period of consolidation. Giles and Ron looked comfortable the runs ticked along to 57 before a ball down leg side didn't get up and one of Giles' new boots deflected the ball on to his wicket with his personal score on 19. Skipper Willis was in next looking to build on last weeks 43 not out and we needed him to score runs again this week. Hubbard was now timing the ball well and was going to the boundary with regularity missing early in the innings, including a mighty six that cleared a very mature tree on the boundary with ease.

This was now a genuine period of consolidation and the players on the boundary were working out what score was needed to bowl to when the Skipper thought his shot had passed the bowler, he called, the bowler had the ball and Hubbard had no chance. Run out on 43, the partnership 49, the best of the day. CYPOS? were 106-5. Next up was Perrera who drove his first ball low back to the bowler to record his 2nd golden duck of the season.........must find him that Primary Club application form!

The Skipper had quite rightly put the run out behind and carried on his good form but your faithful correspondent was next to the wicket and just couldn't get it off the square so after making the scorer note a single down trudged back having been comprehensively bowled (119-7). Tila was quickly in and out for 3 (123-8) bringing our senior overseas player (isn't Scotland abroad?) to the wicket. A couple of lusty blows later his personal, unbeaten score was 15 but importantly we declared on 144-8, the Skipper also unbeaten on 35.

After tea and half time news from the Premiership “Survival Sunday” relegation battles we took to the field with the Skipper's new plan of regularly using slow bowlers as opening bowlers. After Oyster Perrera's opening over it was your correspondent's turn to be the slow bowler entrusted with the responsibility to prove the Skipper's bowling plan was sound. Surprisingly the first ball turned past the bat, 2nd ball was delicately chipped into Iron Fist's hands at short cover. The 3rd ball was short and leggy and should have been 4 but the ball was struck firmly towards Perrera at short backward square leg but rather developing a 3rd (red) eye he held a smart catch. The hat trick ball was a disappointment (too wide) and the over finished with a two to Brookwood (7-2).

A couple of runs came off Perrera's next over. A call came up from the outfield for your Holy correspondent to call in favours from “upstairs” but surely I had already collected two? However a third request was answered as the next over from your faithful correspondent finished with Brookwood 11-3 as an LBW appeal was upheld. Perrera then joined in; being too quick for the Brookwood bat who top edged the ball into the leg side and Skipper Willis made good ground to hold the catch, Brookwood 12-4.

All quiet for an over or two before Perrera induced a straight forward catch to Oldfield at slip (who celebrated taking his first catch off Perrera after many attempts). 23-4. Ten runs more and Perrera ended his spell (6-0-16-3) holding a smart caught and bowled although he conceded 5 no balls and I wouldn't be surprised if there was also a wide or two. I suspect that Brookwood had heard from the Skipper that it was my “memorial” season as they helpfully chipped a full toss to safe hands Perrera at mid wicket leaving themselves 36-7 and my figures 6-2-19-4.

The new bowlers were Tila and Montgomery. All quiet for an over or two, before Montgomery forced a chip to Miller at short cover. (53-8) Tila couldn't get the length quite right so Inspector Gaj was introduced from the top end. Gaj ended all hope that Brookwood had of holding on for a draw as a straight ball didn't bounce bowling the Brookwood Skipper leaving them at 69-9. The denouement of the innings was left to Montgomery as the ball was hit towards deep extra, great ground coverage by Perrera and a dive forward saw the catch taken despite splitting the webbing around the little finger. Montgomery returned figures of 4.2-2-3-2 and Sritharan G 2-0-15-1.

Sadly we discovered that Blackpool (must have used up all my answers to prayers on the cricket field) were relegated along with Birmingham. Our second win of the season, are things on the way up? Next stop Battersea Ironsides – no doubt we will find out then!

Brookwood(a) 15th May11 - match report

Manchester City's victory in the FA cup at the weekend will see their players names enter the history books alongside the greats of Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton and Paul Gascoigne. Yaya Toure's name, as the goalscorer, will also be added to role of honour who scored in an FA cup final - a list headed by Morton Betts of Wanderers who scored the only goal of the first FA cup final played in 1872. Record books (and Wikipedia!) show that Morton was playing under the pseudonym of "A.H. Chequer" however to his team mates he was always known as one Bob Oldfield! It is for such reasons that this season is officially known as the Bob Oldfield memorial season.

On a slightly overcast but warmish Sunday afternoon the Cypos troops - in desperate need of their first victory - gathered at the traditional meeting point of the Brookwood train station pub for the annual fixture against our good friends in Surrey (minus Gaj who decided to show up for a 2pm start rather than the 1:30pm one we were all told about!). The pitch looked a little green on first inspection and in truth be known the skipper was very keen to have a bowl first as it looked like anything near 150 might be a good score. However, thankfully (in hindsight) Charlie lost the toss and was asked to bat first in this time game.

The mighty Saffers of Emslie and Garrard opened the batting and immediately found boundaries, quashing initial worries this could be a batsman's graveyard. Sadly for Emu though he also tried to find one boundary too many early on and hit a full toss straight back into the grateful hands of Mick - the brookwood opening left-armer, who has many a cypos victim to his name - which bought Adeel to the crease earlier than expected. What was to follow was an absolute treat for the long-suffering Cypos lower order spectators who are normally subjected to watching over after over of batsmen "playing themselves in" with the only entertainment being the odd single every 20 deliveries (or "proper cricket" as the batsmen like to call it!). Adeel showed how 21st century cricket should be played - taking the initiative, backing himself and playing some glorious positive shots off front and back foots as well as the odd classical off drive played off one knee - his cypos team-mates and skipper were cooing with admiration (and of course a lot of envy!) back in the hut!

Adeel and GG, who was now starting to get his eye in and pretty much sending the regular ball down legside to the boundary with clinical precision, were going along at a run a ball and providing the sort of entertainment in the first 10 overs of an innings a lower order cyposian - whether umpiring, scoring, or just taking pictures - has been craving for years! When Adeel finally fell (after a couple of previous drop chances) for a sublime 40-odd the crowd were left somewhat deflated as in truth he should have gone on to make a very big score, but that's no doubt for another game, and while Adeel stopped GG kept on going! With the Brookwood skipper tiring after bowling over 12 overs GG was able to capitalise on a couple of loose balls. The slow left armer who also replaced him struggled to find his length early on and again GG dispatched a number of full tosses to the legside boundary to glide effortlessly past his second fifty for cypos.

At the other end new batsman Swiss, after playing a good shot to the boundary, wanted to keep the pace of the innings up but unluckily missed a high full toss that went on to clip his bails. Two quick wickets in succession and things were about to get worse when the number 5 batsman - Bainbridge - with the ability to take the score beyond reach was triggered LBW for a duck by Emu. The Kiwi insisted he got an inside edge, but the south african umpire insisted otherwise - one for pub conversation over the next few years me fears, inspite of all the smiles at the time! So Cypos were 130 for 4 now with 15 overs to go, and there were a few nerves that the infamous Cypos collapse could arise and the unthinkable we might not hit the 200 mark. The skipper though had other ideas!

Charlie instantly took a liking to the bowlers and decided to go after pretty much everything, and run pretty much everything which caused Cypos's very own Douglas Barder - who was now progressing steadilty through the 60s, 70s and 80 run land marks thanks to some strong leg-side shots - a near failure in the joints and lung departments! Once the tin-man was in his 80s we started to think the unthinkable - could GG get his first century for Cypos?

The following half hour was probably more nerve-wracking for those watching the GG - 2011 Stringfellows member of the year - than the big South African himself. While pretty much every ball on the stumps or legside went to the boundary, pretty much every ball outside off stump was a play and a miss! GG was clearly pretty tired, not least because the skipper was belting everything to fielders at long off and long, then insisting on running a second while the throw came in! Finally the time came an GG clipped the ball for 4 (on the legside!) and the big man fell his knees - both emotionally and physically! By the time of the declaration after the 39th over GG carried his bat on triple nelson (111), a fantastic achievement, and the skipper carried his on 43* with the final Cypos total a credible 225.

A buoyant skipper could now smell the first victory of the season and was urged by those desperate for a win to be ruthless and go for the kill from the off. So the skipper opened the bowling attack with Metcalfe and Monks! Now while neither of these two may be associated with pace like fire and making opening batsmen quake in their boots, the skipper was to be quickly rewarded for his innovative thinking. Metkay's first over delivered some stinging carry, while Monks' very first ball delivered a caught-and-bowled! After his second ball to it was clear the pitch was clearly receptive to spin bowling so it was unsurprising the Monks bowled 10 full-tosses in a row! More surprising though was that off one of those balls the batsman topped edge the ball to a short fine leg where one David Metcalfe manage to hold a catch!

Cypos were now well on top, and Metkay decided to join the wicket column too thanks to a ball that - on a day of surprises - he actually managed to get to hit the stumps! It was all about Metkay and Monks at this stage, and to reinforce the point Metkay sent down a cracking delivery which caught the outside edge of the ever-popular Steve's bat with Monks reacting by diving behind and to the left to take a pretty special 1-in-10 catch (of course Monks claimed he knew exactly what he was doing, others would argue luck played quite a big part in it!). With the confidence unbearable Monks was now in his bowling element beating the bat - often in the flight - on regular occasions and adding another couple of bowled dismissals to his tally. The skipper gave him the extra overs and the opportunity to take a 5-for but it just would not happen before others were bought on to take the remaining wickets. Monks took four wickets and Metcalfe two which effectively had won us the game.

With Brookwood 40-6, the Pontiff was bought on for a quick 2 over blast and immediately dismissed two batsmen thanks to Cyrus's and Charlie's safe hands. At the other end the disney superstar - sporting yet another tatoo - initially struggled with his line and length against a Brookwood middle order batsman who was starting to up the run rate and hit regular boundaries, but found a crackerjack deliverly to knock back (yet again!) the top of off stump of a lower order batsman! There then followed a bit of a partnership between the freehitting middle order batsman and the number 11. Depsite a couple of overs from Gaj, Bainbridge and Swiss Cypos could just not make that final breakthrough. So with time ticking and Cypos failing to 'keep on it' the skipper decided enough was enough and bought Saint Bob back for his third over. Third ball in and his flight tempted the Brookwood bat out of his crease for one shot too many with the ball sailing past the outside edge into the hands of charlie who duly broke the stumps to record Cypos's first win of the season.

A really enjoyable game, played in a great spirit as is always the case with Brookwood fixture. Some pictures, and a couple of video clips hopefully, can be found as usual on the cypos picasa website here

Before I start I should say congratulations to young Mr Garrard. He is the latest member to join the CYPOS? century club after a fantastic 111 not out against Brookwood today.

We currently have the below 19 available for this Sundays return fixture against Brookwood. So before I have to forcibly stand 8 people down I thought I would see if I had any volunteers. Film & dinner tonight

Hi all, for those coming to the dinner tonight I’ve not reserved a table at Strada as they don’t take bookings however they did say they shouldn’t be that busy after 8pm tonight. So can the first ones at the Royal Festival Hall (i.e. Terry and Jules) if it’s not those of us watching the film ask for a table of 10 people when get to Strada. If is busy then we’ll go to the Wagamama’s next door instead.

For those coming to the film in a hour – see you in the Riverfront café which is at the front of the BFI if you were to come in from the Thames path. Sadly I received this email last night, and while no one can replace Sir Viv I’m sure we can shout some abuse at Gordon Greenidge for all the years of misery he caused the England bowlers!

Pacific(a) 8th May 2011 - match report

Pacific CC welcomed Cypos to Broxbourne on a sunny Sunday afternoon with Cypos still searching for their first win in a season which has started as slow as an Alpine glacier.

As I’m sure the good reader is aware, Broxbourne is home to the new Lee Valley White Water Centre which will host the Canoe Slalom in London’s 2012 Olympic Games. Whereas it was hoped that this may have inspired the Cypos players to sporting greatness, by the middle of the Cypos response to Pacific’s 217 all out it was evident that we were in fact up the creek without a paddle.

Things had begun well for Cypos as the Skipper won the toss and elected to bowl. Tila and Adeel opened and immediately found some lateral movement off the pitch, with both of the Pacific openers playing and missing on several occasions. It was Tila who finally made the breakthrough as an attempted drive was lofted straight back into his hands for a regulation catch. The Skipper’s delight was clear at having nicked a wicket early doors, something of an unfamiliar feeling this season.

Metcalfe and Cyrus replaced the opening bowlers; Metcalfe returning after a lengthy absence from the Cypos line-up. He wasted no time in slotting back into his usual rhythm as his first ball was crashed away through the covers for 4. It was clear that a dream return was not going to be on the cards as Metcalfe found the edge an over later only to see the ball fly directly between the keeper and first slip. Cyrus continued to bowl steadily at the other end and was eventually rewarded with a rip-snorting ball which cut in dramatically off the pitch and knocked back the stumps. The batsman looked on bemused, hardly having offered a shot.

Cypos were in good spirits and sensed blood but sadly for the next 15 overs the only blood was that on the noses of the Cypos bowlers as the remaining Pacific opener and No.3 settled into a groove and began to accumulate runs at a steady rate. Ganny, Kaz and Howell all tried their luck but eventually both batsmen had their 50s. The breakthrough came eventually as Kaz got his man and Howell quickly followed that up with another. Tila and Adeel then returned and all of a sudden wickets were falling left, right and centre. Amazingly Pacific collapsed from 202-3 to 217 all out. Tila at one point was on a hat-trick but it wasn’t to be and he eventually finished with fantastic, jug-avoiding figures of 4-29 off 8. Adeel also returned excellent figures of 2-17 off 7. The middle of the innings had been hard work but the Pacific collapse had left Cypos with a fighting chance of getting a precious victory on the board.

My word, what a tea! Tasty sandwiches? Tick. Sausage rolls? Tick. Quiche? Tick. Good selection of cakes? You bet. But what’s this? Choc-ices? Monsieur, you are really spoiling us. Everybody appeared so satisfied that many did not reappear for 45 mins and chose to kick back and watch the first half of Man Utd-Chelsea. Tila believed that his luck might be in but ultimately Chelsea proved they are past it and decided to capitulate within 45 seconds of kick-off.

Talking of capitulations....Cypos still had 40 overs to score 218 and win the game. Pacific opened with two steady bowlers who were very consistent in line and length. One was a particularly angry West Indian but Howell and Cromack did not look in any danger and neither was going to be returning to the pavilion bearing bruises like those inflicted by Holding, Marshall or Garner. Unfortunately for Howell rather than bounce him out the bowler extracted an unexpected degree of swing and broke through the Welshman’s defences.

Out came Cypos’ very own Calypso kid and things briefly looked up as Hubbard and Cromack settled down. Cromack though, perhaps suffering from some delayed brain freeze caused by the earlier choc-ice, played a disastrous shot and spooned the ball up to point for a simple catch. Cypos badly needed solid partnership and Kaz and Hubbard duly provided, putting on 50. Kaz’s innings came to an unfortunate end on 39 when a crisply struck drive found a fielder in the covers. The jubilation of the Pacific players reflected what a great catch it was as the fielder dived forward and picked up the ball millimetres off the turf. Any lower and he would have been digging a hole.

And then....crash, bang, wallop, kaboom! Ron, Swiss, Adeel, Cyrus and Metcalfe all departed in quick succession as the Cypos batting line-up imploded. At this point the chase was never on; in fact it never really got going. The Skipper and Ganny hung on valiantly at the end as Cypos completed their 40 overs with only 142 on the board. Credit must go to Pacific’s bowlers. They introduced a series of spinners who were turning the ball sharply, keeping the run rate down and taking wickets. There was never really any momentum to the Cypos innings and they must wait at least another week before opening their account for the season.

Finchley CC(h) 1st may 2011 - match report

The momentous Windsor-Middleton union last Friday was the 15th royal wedding conducted during the 1,000 year history of the Collegiate church of St.Peter, Westminster, to give Westminster Abbey it's formal name. Henry I was the first to start the tradition when he wed Matilda of Scotland within its walls in 1100. What is less well known is the name of the priest who married that happy royal couple - one Bob Oldfield! It is for such contributions to monarchic dynasty that this season is the official Bob Oldfield memorial season - God save our Bob!

On yet another hot and sunny day in West London, Cyposians turned up for their annual May fixture with the cricket-loving folk of the mighty Finchley - this time with Cypos hosting the fixture at our Old Tiffinians ground. With rumours circulating that Finchley may have a couple of firsts in their line-up who may be a bit handy with the Bat, Skipper Willis was urged to win the toss and bat first to save a long day in the outfield! Clearly Charlie was having none of this defeatist attitude and on winning toss decided to bat first first anyway but for a different reason; there had been a junior match in the morning and the pitch was looking a bit worse for ware so really didn't want to bat last on a dodgy looking strip.

Sumann and Cromack opened the innings for Cypos. Things got off to a great start with Sumann hitting a boundary off the very first ball from the Finchley opener bowling from the football pitch end. However within 2 more balls catastrophe struck after a risky second was taken and TC's stumps were broken by an good direct hit from the outfield - the major was out for a 'diamond duck (run-out at the non-stricker's end without facing a ball!). All credit to TC though as, while obviously disappointed, he took it in good spirits and got on with an afternoon of scoring (on paper!). Adeel took to the middle and looked very good from the off timing the ball well. Hopes were high for the two talented Pakistani batsmen at the crease until Sumann got a shooter that kept very low on his pads, resulting in a plum LBW.

Cypos were now in trouble - with less than 20 on the board we were already 2 down - which didn't make it easy for GG's first outing to the middle in 2011. Still, both GG and Adeel knuckled down and while a 2-paced pitch wth uneven bounce was clearly causing problems for the batsmen, if not the Finchley bowlers, CYPOS started to rebuild. At 40-2 GG was just starting to get his eye in when unfortunately a leading edge resulted in an easy dolly catch to send him back to the hutch, but there were enough shots in there to show 2011 could be the season that lives up to the GG hype. Sadly for GG his dismissal was his second disappointment of the long weekend - rumour has it the Saffer was expecting to see something completely different on Friday after being told someone was going to get taken up the aisle!

Sid joined Adeel in the middle and, after taking 17 balls to get off the mark, simply carried on from he left off at Twickenham the previous week - minus the suicidal running. Both Sid and Adeel got their eye in and started to enjoy themselves hitting boundaries almost every over, until Frank - the clever slow bowler - came on from the pavilion end. Adeel couldn't resist and after hitting a boundary held out the next ball to mid off after adding an excellent and much needed 32 runs to the total. Skipper Willis was in at six and at the drinks Cypos had about 80-runs on the board. After the break Sid, who was timing the ball nicely, tried to flick the left arm over bowler round the corner only to catch the leading edge and walk back to the pavilion after a very soft dismissal.

Monks came in at 7 and with Charlie kept the scoreboard ticking over with easy ones and twos. When Charlie was eventually bowled by the slow bowler Cypos had stabilised somewhat and it was looking possible to bat out the 40 overs. The score took a boost too thanks to Royston's cameo of 20 runs. On a ground where he scored a 14-ball 50 last year he quickly got into the zone spanking a handful of boundaries before holding out to long-off mainly due to some excellent bowling from the Finchley legspinners who were extracting significant turn. Monks, supported by the Pontiff and Gannan, saw out the 40 overs with some good running and ended with 33 and another not out! Finchley were set a slightly under par 177 for victory.

After an average tea, Cypos took to the field with Royston and Ram opening up the bowling attack. Both bowled exceptionally well against some good Finchley opening batsmen, and on a track where anything pitched slightly short now just sat up to be hit. With no breakthrough in the first 10 overs Adeel and the Pontiff were called into the attack. Adeel managed to extract some good movement, while the Pontiff showed that he also beatifies edges as well as ex-popes! With some expert flight and guile the Pontiff had Finchley openers on the defensive - if Bob keeps up such miracle bowling this season he too will be well on his way to a sainthood!

However the wickets just would not come, so on a turing pitch the Skipper bought on Monks to chance his arm. As usual this season Monks bowled some crackers - aided by the turning pitch - together with the other stuff which was quickly dispatched to the boundary. Still the skipper showed faith, and after 3 consecutive fours managed to take a quick and very close stumping which resulted in Cypos's first breakthrough. Gannan was bought on from the football pitch end and bowled some excellent deliveries which extracted significant turn. Unfortunately the game was now gone for Cypos and the batsmen started to open up a bit more. This actually worked well for Monks as he picked up a second stumping after the other opener - now with a 50 to his name - came down the wicket and missed a flighted delivery. Adeel, who so deserved a wicket, came back on to close the innings with Gannan but Finchley cruised to the target with 8 wickets in hand and 5 overs spare.

The season may have started but, like the start last year, the Cypos batting, bowling and fielding hasn't! Some pictures from the game can be found as usual on the Cypos picasa website here

Tickets are still available, but now that it has been announced both the director of the film and Sir Viv Richards will be doing a Q&A session at the end of the film I doubt they will remain for too much longer. So if you fancy going get in there now! A few of us have already got tickets for ourselves and partners, and it should be a good night.

We’ll work out more details in the next week, but the plan is to go for a pizza after the event at the Royal Festival Hall Strada with other halves too. I’ll send round an email later in the week, but do let me know if u can make it for a bite to eat afterwards as will book a table for us all

Twickenham(a) 24th April11 - match report

The cricket aficionados amongst you will know that Jasper Viall became the first known cricketing fatality when he was struck by a bat while trying to catch the ball during a game in Sussex 1624, however I suspect few of you will know the name of the player who was carrying the bat - one Bob Oldfield. Bob still uses that 400 year old bat today and it is because of such sporting legacy - and for all his international fans on this blog - that this season is the official Bob Oldfield memorial season.

On a hot and sunny Easter Sunday Cypos rocked up (an hour early) to the beautiful Twickenham Green for their annual west london contest with the good folk of Twickenham. Cyposians had come from all over to play in this match: Cromack had travelled up from Wiltshire, Royston dashed up from Bournemouth, while Bob had flown in from the Vatican city that morning after delivering mass to 20,000 cheering Romans - a good effort all round!

Richie Bernaud famously said "the hallmark of a great captain is the ability to win the toss, at the right time" so a young monks in his first game as captain of Cypos called heads and of course the coin came down tails. With little surprise - on a hot day and a flat track - the opposition captain decided to bat first in this 40 over match. Monks had been warned that captaining Cypos is rather like being in charge of a cemetery - lots of people underneath you, but no one listening - however Royston, from the pizza restaurant end (tip of the hat to Big A there!) and everyone's favourite gameshow host - Noel Adeel Edmonds - opened up with some lively bowling. Royston found the edge on a number of occasions, which quickly resulted in Monks switching between 2 slips and 2 third men on regular occasions! So many runs were being scored in that area Greame Greene could have written a novel about it!

Royston's well earned breather saw the first run out of the season for Ram(bo) who after a couple of looseners got into some good rhythm and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his 6 over spell. Meanwhile at the other end the blog readers favourite - His Holiness Bob Oldfield - limbered up to replace a fine 6 over spell from Noel who had earned his money from the Banker. The Pontiff celebrated the resurrection of our saviour (no, not you Sid!) with some finely flighted deliveries and a few darts - clearly his Q&A session on Italian TV this week, where he answered questions on war, faith and adversity from people around the world, hadn't distracted him from his line and length. However the openers were now starting to open up their shoulders and runs started to come a bit more quickly especially as the first opener raced past his 50 mark and Twickenham were 90 without loss at the drinks break.

Kaz was bought on for a quick 3 over spell from the pizza restaurant end, but unfortunately was unable to get a wicket so finally the skipper bought himself on to bowl and to set an example for his troops. Now if leg-spin bowling is supposed to be like a fine painting, then Monks' leg spin was more like a Rolf Harris painting this time round. Unfortunately he took a bit of a pasting (aka 10 an over) and after 3 overs had to replace himself with Kaz. Rumour has it Monks was trying out this new ball which in the leg-spinner lexicon is known as the 'floater' - ironically the same word is used to describe something similar in your lavatory!

However at the other end Gaj had now replaced Bob and was causing all sorts of difficulties so much so that the other batsman when on 49 nicked it behind and stand-in wicket-keeper took a great low catch to deliver the first breakthrough of the day. Even with the run-rate increasing Cypos stuck at it with Kaz taking a couple of well-deserved wickets and a returning Royston picking up one too. Thanks to an outstanding last over by the returning Adeel we kept Twickenham to a challenging but not unachievable 231.

After a good tea - jacket potatoes and pizza to weigh down the batsmen - Cromack and Kaz opening the Cypos reply. Clearly the battered ball - which looked like it had done 5 rounds with Mike Tyson never mind 3 overs of Monks - posed a few problems for the batsmens' timing as too did the longish outfield. Still Cromack and Kaz went along a steady nick - around 4 an over - before Kaz started to unleash some demon shots against some very tight opening bowlers. Kaz was bowled by a shooter when in the thirties which bought in-form Ron Hubbard to the crease. With TC and a new-to-the-crease Ron at the wicket the required run rate started to climb, as not only boundaries seemed hard to come by but even the odd quick single. Once into double figures Ron started to have ago only to unfortunatly sky a shot into the hands of the oppo. We were still looking good though especially with Sid - who looked to be in supreme form from the off - now picking up the run-rate.

Immediately after the drinks break TC fell whilst in his twenties, and this bought a fiery and racy Adeel to the wicket. The Silverback and Noel really started to up the run rate and Cypos were well and truely looking on for the win, albeit with some rather dubious running. Unfortunately the captain had failed to tell Adeel that Cypos were not in the IPL this year and that some of our players (aka Sid) are now just shy of the athletic sprint capacity of a professional cricketer. It had been coming for a while but thanks to some excellent Twickenham fielding and a direct hit Sid was run out in his prime and in his 30s. Worse still Adeel fell the very next over while in his teens.

Still we all had faith in the batting abilities of Monks and Royston now at the crease, with less than a 100 to get and 15 overs to get them in. Sadly they were shattered within minutes, or 4 balls to be more accurate. Monks edged behind after his 3rd ball without troubling the scorer and Royston held out to backward point off his first ball. The painful term for any captain 'a Cypos collapse' was now well and truly on! Gannan - who barely had to pad up - survived a couple of deliveries before holding out to the covers again without troubling the scorers. The Pontiff enjoyed a few classy shots to the boundary with support from Ram before he forgot his body is over 400 years old and while his spirit urged him on for that second run in truth his body made it about half way down the pitch before the bails were removed. The last man in Gaj was told to try and see out the last 10 overs by blocking and bringing some dignity to Cypos so it was unsurprising to see the number 11 take a swing on his 3rd ball and give an easy catch to the covers, completing the total of 4 ducks in the entire sorry Cypos bottom order.

In the end Cypos were bowled out for 150, with 10 overs still remaining. Views were mixed on the new skipper's (or Mr.100%) performance with a disgruntled Pontiff heard mumbling he performed like an easter egg Hunt ...or something that sounded similar to that word! Charlie is back next week!

Kempton(a) 17th April11 - match report

The second match of the Bob Oldfield memorial season saw a full-strength Cypos travel to Surrey for the now regular April fixture with Kempton. This is always an enjoyable fixture given the friendliness of the opposition, but it is also a challenging one as at this early stage of the season we found ourselves playing on a pitch right at the edge of the square meaning 6-runs was a mere flick of the wrists, as we were to find out!

Skipper Willis won the toss and boldly decided to bowl first on a hot day. Tila opened from the Racecourse end while "Adeel (or no deal") opened from the Pavilion end. From the early stages it became obvious that a big score was on the cards with the left-handed openers able to flick it to boundary seemingly at will. However, Tila and Adeel stuck at it and always looked like threatening, especially once Noel Edmonds got into some rhythm. After 12 overs the Kempton openers were going on at nearly a run a ball, and the skipper was in need of some divine intervention. With his popemobile gleaming in the carpark, His Holiness replaced Tila and slowed the run rate down for a couple of overs.

Meanwhile at the other end Noel was replaced by the Disney superstar Cyrus - aka Hanna Montana. Both the Pontiff and Hanna must have felt like they were playing in the IPL as the big hitting left-hander now had his eye in and boundaries were coming near enough every over. Still Cyrus kept going and was able to pick up the wicket of the other opener just before the drinks break. Monks was bought on after the drinks break and while he started off tightly and beat the bat of the new batsman a couple of times he soon started to get spanked to the legside boundary. Unfortunately Gannan came on just at the time the batsman were hitting everything and was unlucky to face two batsmen in top form.

With a few overs to go 300+ was looking likely especially as the opening batsman had now hit his century and the the number 3 batsman was hitting everything out the park! The skipper though turned to the golden arm of wales favourite son Owain Howell. He picked up a wicket, which then allowed Bob followed by Tila to pick up some well deserved wickets before Kempton closed their innings on 285 - ouch!

After a decent tea, and having been joined by a stag-do party all dressed as tigers to cheer on Kempton, the southern hemisphere dream team of Bainbridge and Emslie opened the batting. While they found it tricky against the slow bowling in the first couple of overs, the kiwi then the saffer started to find their form and got the runs flowing, and the run rate up at over 5 an over. Unfortunately Emu ran himself out just shy of 30, but while Ron was to play himself in on the flat batting track Bainbridge continued to belt the ball all over the place and when he lost his wicket for 80 the game was still very winnable.

However, Kempton now bought on some better bowlers. Owain trying to push the run rate on was bowled while in the teens, as was Saya who followed him. With less than 10 overs to go Ron and Monks started to really go for it, with Ron spanking the odd 6 and Monks running the threes. The required run rate though just kept on increasing and when monks ran himself out over 12 an over was needed in the last couple of overs. Tila kept on swinging, but in truth the game was now lost - we reached a respectable 260 in our 40 overs, 25 runs shy of the target.

The View from the Balcony (St Peter's Square) His Holiness reports on the 2011 seasons opening fixture away to Sunbury. (Subtitled “here we go again”)

His Holiness guided the PopeMobile the short distance from his summer residence in Green Street (Sunbury) to the SCC ground, arriving as one might expect, at one o'clock as required. Unexpectedly HH found himself all alone until gone 1.10pm when Messrs Bainbridge and Montgomery arrived.

Some things never change however and not unexpectedly was the news from the Skipper that there had been 3 drop outs from the original side one very late on which meant it was too late to find a replacement. So we were down to 10. The 10 included two debutants who would soon be used to the excitement of finding who was really playing for CYPOS? and what time would we actually start.

So welcome to Sumaan Azmi and Terry Gracey......do you know what you are letting yourselves in for? The opening weekend of the season was glorious bright sunshine and a balmy 21 degrees on the thermometer. Remarkably the Skipper won the toss and invited Sunbury to bat first. Adeel and debutant Terry (Gracey) opened the bowling. The opening exchanges were fairly even with both Adeel and Terry bowling some good deliveries without luck and the Sunbury openers picking up runs where they could.

Gus and Tila replaced the openers after 10 overs and the game continued as before CYPOS? just couldn't find a wicket until Gus encouraged a pull into mid wicket that was snaffled by your correspondent. As the Skipper had jovially announced that this was the “Bob Oldfield Memorial Season” at the start of the game I can only quote Mark Twain and say that reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated as you will discover as you continue to read this report.

I'm please to report that Sid accompanied by Keeran added his weight to our support. Inspector Gaj rolled up some time later to perform his duties as favourite uncle and babysitter. Sunbury continued to add to their score from 68-1. The Skipper's next move was to introduce your correspondent into the attack. Swiss replaced Gus an over or so later and immediately struck as our other debutant Sumaan pouched his chance, Sunbury 102-2.

Sumaan then replaced Swiss as Cypos? suddenly tightened the screw. Your correspondent continued his Lazarus like comeback to take his first wicket of the season (146-3) Sumaan was bowling unplayable balls and first Swiss and then “Slumberland” Bainbridge held chances (148-4 and 155-5). The Skipper pulled off a smart leg side stumping before, in the same over, Tila held a low catch at extra cover to give your correspondent some more victims (163-6 and 164-7). First Sumaan and then HH were withdrawn to be replaced by Tila and Terry. Sunbury declared shortly after on 185-7 off 43 overs.

After tea Sumaan and Cromack opened the Cypos? Reply. Sumaan hit his first ball for 4 before being given out caught behind by your correspondent. Sumaan was adamant that he hit the ground and not the ball, your Papal Umpire begs to differ. (4-1). Slumberland Bainbridge joined The Major and this pair moved the ball around splendidly although Slumberland was enjoying more than his share of luck as he imitated the Cheshire Cat using 7 lives during his innings as he grinned his way serenely past 50. Cromack fell to the curse of the drinks break chipping up a return to the bowler (95-2).

Swiss Tony Vernon was next in and gave good support until Bainbridge lost concentration and was bowled for 77, 125-3. Vernon's innings was unluckily cut short as his new partner, Adeel drove hard back up the pitch and the bowler deflected the ball to run the stunned Vernon out for 20. (140-4) At this point CYPOS? were still in control with wickets and overs in hand. However it is always possible for CYPOS? to snatch a draw for the jaws of victory.

First the Skipper fell for 8 cleaned bowled (152-5) and shortly after Gracey arrived for his first CYPOS? knock Adeel drove the ball back to the bowler for 16 leaving CYPOS? 159-6. With overs ticking down the batting rusty Gracey and even rustier Papal Correspondent just failed to do the business as the innings closed on 183-6 off 37 overs, 3 runs short of the win.

Still a good competitive start to the season agaisnt a good bunch of lads, the game of cricket the winner. If we could play games like that, on grounds like that, in weather like that, against teams like that could anybody complain. Hi everyone, Thursday 7th April is our final winter net of 2011. We have looked into extending the run into the rest of April, however all nets are fully booked. Still, there are plans for a few ad hoc summer nets from May onwards – the Captain and I will keep you posted. Please do also check out the “payment” tab in the nets spreadsheet* to see if you owe the club money from this winter’s net, or even to see if the treasurer owes u!

Also just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped out with nets this year and to all those who have participated – hopefully this will translate into lots of 5-fors for the bowlers and many a century for us batsmen! Thank you.

We have a good turn out of 11 people for the final net, although we do have 2 nets so can everyone ready to go from 7pm as batsmen will be required to bowl too. The cost for this net will be £7 (in order to recover the full cost to club of 2 nets which is £72).

MCC laws of cricket update for 2011

There have been a number of updates to the laws of cricket over the winter. Not that Cypos umpires understand the original laws anyway, but please do make yourself aware of the latest changes which can be found here - the batsmen are especially keen for everyone to familarise themselves on issues surrounding "rare dismissals" (this does not refer to LBW decisions when the ball would actually miss leg stump 10yrds - that is known as a "common dismissal" in Cypos terminology!)

Pre-season Cypos golf day - Pineridge 19th March 2011

For the second year in a row a handful of cypos players held a pre-season golf day. Unlike the usual start of the cricket season we were luckily blessed with beautiful Surrey sunshine at the Pineridge Golf Club - sadly though the golf was less than dazzling - some of the shots were so ugly they would make Sid's off-drive look respectable! As expected Al showed us all the way with his booming driver off the first tee - the only notable difference between Al having a driver or a cricket bat is he seems to have more luck making contact using the former, other than that his technique for both disciplines is identical! James W wasn't going to let Al make all the running though as he showed a particular talent for scrambling not just in and around the greens, but - in truth - from the very moment he had any tee-shot! Meanwhile the shy, quiet and modest Tiger Monks was starting to show signs of his God-given natural ability ...perhaps this explains why he took an 8 off the first hole!

Yes, while it was officially red nose day on Friday the golf played such was the standard we could have been mistaken as some sort of fundraiser for Comic Relief given the laughable attempts to get round 18 holes with a bit of dignity. For a club that have produced the likes of Wayne Thompson (a scratch golfer) and Dave Metkay (a 3-times winner of the Isles of Silly Masters) it was a new low in the golfing history of Cypos. Such was the state of affairs that most people had given up scoring half way round, which probably explains why Monks declared himself the winner on the stapleford scoring system by one shot over James Willis! Let's hope the start of the cricket season sees some improvement on the golf course soon.

Hello Cricket fans

It's that time of year again, it's cold, its grey and it's slightly damp it must be the cricket season.

The first game is fast approaching and I need to start to collect your availability. As always the more information you give me the easier it is for me to make sure you don't miss out on the weekends you want to play. You can give me as many dates as you want and if you know dates you definitely can't play then give me those as well so Fraser and I can plan whether we will ever need to get 2 teams out.

Don't forget if you want to play in a game you will need to give me your availability by the Friday of the week before so for the first game on the 10^th April please make sure I know by Friday 1^st.

And of course if you can only be selected if you have paid your membership fee for the year. If you haven't already I'm sure Ben can help you with the various ways to do so.

Hi everyone,

The new season is almost upon us so it is time once again for the annual pre-season captain's drinks. It's a tradition in Cypos that before every season we meet up as a club to laugh hysterically at each others hopes and dreams for the forthcoming season. Whether it be setting yourself a goal of 30 wickets or a 50+ average (or both if your name is Royston!) this is the occasion to set your sights high, prior to being bought crashing back down to reality after the first game of the season.

It's also your final opportunity to whisper sweet nothings in the captain's ear in order to get your favourite batting slot or that new ball cherry in your hand (rumour has it though a 3 beers and a bag of pork scratchings is the going rate for an opening batting slot!)

This year I thought we could meet up at the Rocks - where we held the AGM & award ceremony last year - so can enjoy some good food along with a couple of beers (or as we like to call it in Cypos: 'pre-season training'). You should already have the 25th march pencilled into your diary so look forward to seeing everyone there at 7:30pm.

Grateful if you could confirm you are confirming by Tuesday, as we'll try and give the Rocks (10a, Vauxhall Bridge Road, Pimlico, SW1V 2SD) a bit of advance warning
